Week 1 of our 4 week Challenge for August is done! So how did everyone do?

It was an interesting week for sure! I don’t know about you, but summertime is supposed to have an easier vibe, and a slower pace, but not in my house! The week was filled with cooking, projects at work and home, chores, gardening, exercise, and Tax Free shopping for back to school! We were in and out of the house running errands, enjoying lunch at a local restaurant and some family fun!

I posted the challenge on my refrigerator at home, invited my family, friends, colleagues, weightitgetsbetter family and my social media buddies. I received mixed reviews with lots of positive feedback and eager participation, but many regrets due to summer vacations and travel plans.

So how did it go? I was able to hold strong and not eat or drink anything on the list, but had a few tough moments during the week.

My family normally wants some sort of “Junk Food” night which means I don’t cook. So what did they choose? Chicken Wings AND FRIES!! LOL I made a salad and added left over baked chicken breast.

Then, everyone at home as complaining that there wasn’t anything “GOOD” to eat in the house, so I did a Face Time with my son when I went to Publix ( that one of the main supermarkets in South Florida) and on Sunday, my husband went with me to Aldi ( a newer addition to the South Florida Supermarket scene, I LOVE IT!). So what did these shopping trips produce? ALMOST EVERYTHING from this Challenge List!!

I was able to swap out soda and Juice for zero calorie flavored sparkling water and wheat bread for my family(without any complaints, THANK GOD!). Sometimes, they give me small victories, but along with those victories, is a lot of junk food choices – muffins, chips, cookies and ice cream.  As for the alcohol, we have always maintained a well stocked liquor cabinet as to be able to offer a guests visiting our home a beverage of their choosing. I’m not a big drinker but do enjoy a glass of wine or single malt scotch every once in a while. Thankfully, I didn’t have any alcohol all week either.  So, I do live a REAL LIFE with food and drink challenges around all the time.

The feedback from my fellow challenge participants was really awesome. Some people chose to eliminate all of the items on the list, one person decided to do a vegetable and fruit fast for a week, and others decided to eliminate as many of the items as possible.  What I love about these type of challenges is they aren’t one size fits all. It’s quite OK to modify the criteria to better suit your lifestyle. The general consensus was awareness and improvement. Almost everyone shared their experiences of being more conscious of what they were eating as well as portions. Everyone agreed that the accountability of the challenge helped make improvements. From my perspective, that’s really the main idea of the challenge. With awareness, we are then more conscious of what we are eating, which makes it possible to improve our decision making and select healthier options.

    look at the spelling on quite a few of your posts.
    Many of them are rife with spelling issues and I find it very troublesome to tell the truth however

      oops! Thank you for your comments and feedback. I do appreciate your honesty. I use two spell check programs and a human proofreader. I don’t proofread for myself as I think that defeats the purpose. It’s tricky to proof one’s own work, at least in my opinion.
